Huge Harvest!

Hey guys!

We just had a huge harvest here at the garden- 20 pounds of tomatoes, 10 pounds of lettuce, and over 16 pound of onion, just to name a few things. We donated all of it to McAuley House, a group that provides meals to the homeless.

Everything in the Garden is looking great, although some plants are coming to an end. We've got no more blueberries, unfortunately, and the yellow zucchini seem just about done. But on the other hand, the tomatoes are just starting to fruit, as well as the eggplant.

Hello!
Some of you may be aware, but there is a small school across the street from the student garden called Brown Fox Point. They have students ranging from ages ages 3-6. Over the summer, Andrew and I have been giving interactive lessons about soil, seeds, and plants. Some students came over to the garden last week to harvest tomatoes and cucumbers, identify what's growing, and to learn about different male and female flowers (yes, they exist).



We're slowly getting the garden ready for everyone's return in a couple of weeks. There is still plenty to weed...

We look forward to seeing everyone back on campus. We'll announce the first workday of the semester shortly. Hope to see you there!

Harvest Galore

Hello everyone!
It's incredible how time flies. It feels like days ago that Andrew and I were starting seedlings in the greenhouse, and now the garden is producing pounds and pounds of harvest each day. Currently, tomatoes and cucumbers are our main crops. We've already harvested over 20 pounds of assorted cherry tomatoes. They are delicious on salads, pesto pasta, or straight off the vine.




Our cucumber plants have sprawled everywhere! Originally planted on a 2 feet wide bed (without trellising--probably a mistake on our part..) the cucumbers have sprawled over onto an adjacent bed. They've produced so much fruit in the last couple weeks--we've saved some to pickle this weekend.

Our eggplant took a while to bear fruit, but they're finally here. We began harvesting them about a week ago. We've planted Dusky Eggplant--a round bulbous type--and Little Fingers--a long slender variety. Both are delicious.

This is our broccoli. The little suckers have not emerged yet. But they're looking quite big and robust, hence the photo update.

The garden as it stands today--the vertical shoots on the second row from the right are onions, which are just about ready to be harvested.

Mid July Garden Update!

Hello everyone!
We apologize for the lack of update in quite some time, but here are some new photos of the garden as it stands today.

The peas are now over 6 feet tall and quite heavy--the trellises keep toppling over, and we've had to reinforce them with new bamboo! We planted peas April and we've been harvesting them consistently since June.

Our tomato plants look beautiful. These are Cherry Roma tomatoes that should be ready to be picked within 2 weeks. There is a tomato plant fungus going around in Rhode Island (a strain of the fungus that caused the Irish potato famine), but nothing on our plants yet! Keeping our fingers crossed...
Our first cucumber--still a little prickly, but probably ready to eat by next week.
Blueberries are our summer treat here right now--we eat them straight off the bush and they're tart and delicious!
We harvested nearly 15 pounds of carrots last week--they were enormous!

The summer has been going amazingly so far. Providence has been incredibly rainy and cloudy (June of 2009 was the dimmest June in the Northeast since 1903....) but the weather has finally picked up within the last week. Despite the wacky weather our plants look great, and our harvest is plentiful.

Most of our food goes to Amos House--a nonprofit food bank and shelter about 15 minutes from Brown campus that provides breakfast and lunch 6 times a week. We've also been eating quite a bit of the food from the garden, and it's been incredibly rewarding to harvest, cook, and eat the foods grown with our own hands--from seed to plate.

Harvest Day

Hey everyone!

We had a HUGE harvest yesterday. We got over 20 pounds of peas, almost 20 pounds of lettuce, and 6 and a half pounds of spinach! We donated it all to Amos House, a food bank that serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner for whoever shows up.

It looks like we're not even close to done with all the peas, and we have a bunch more lettuce as well. The peppers are starting to form, and the rest of the garden is looking great too!

What Growth!

Hey guys!

There's been a ton of Garden activity since the last post. Everything is enormous (including the weeds, until those were taken care of...).

PEAS!!! (We harvested over a pound today, and that's just the beginning)

But peas aren't all that have been blooming...

The first flowers of our tomato plants! There are even some tiny, pea-sized tomatoes starting to develop.

The whole garden is growing like crazy...
